Starting an ecommerce business in India

Starting an ecommerce business in India begins with a workable offer and margin. Use this first-store plan, budget worksheet and checkout checklist.

Starting an ecommerce business in India begins with an offer you can fulfil at a workable margin. Decide what you will sell, who needs it and what remains from a delivered order. Then build the smallest store that lets a buyer understand the product and complete a purchase.

Build the cost sheet before ordering stock. Test payment and delivery before inviting buyers. Set a cash ceiling before buying traffic. This sequence keeps your own-brand launch focused on an order you can deliver and support.

Start with a buyer and a problem

Write down a situation where someone would need your product. “People who shop online” is too broad to guide the store. “Someone who carries lunch on a crowded commute and wants to avoid spills” gives you something to investigate.

Ask about what they use now, what they paid and where it fails. Avoid asking whether they like your business idea. A friendly answer can hide the fact that they would not switch products at your intended price.

Turn the notes into an offer draft. Include the actual product, the use case, the intended price and a reason to believe the promise. If you cannot demonstrate the main claim with the sample in your hand, revise the claim or the product before writing ads.

Make a cost sheet before ordering inventory

Ask suppliers for written quotes with the specification, quantity, payment timing and expected dispatch date. Record whether packaging, transport and applicable taxes are included. Compare the same specification across quotes; otherwise the cheapest quote may describe a different product.

Calculate the amount left after product cost, packaging, delivery, collection charges and expected losses from returns or failed deliveries. Use that amount to decide what an acquisition test can afford. The D2C business model guide shows this order-level arithmetic.

Next, draw the cash calendar. A profitable-looking order worksheet can still leave you unable to pay a supplier if money is tied up in stock or awaiting settlement. Put the next replenishment payment on that calendar before deciding that the bank balance is available for advertising.

A ₹1 lakh starting budget worksheet

Hypothetical worked example: allocate ₹1 lakh across the launch costs below. Fill in supplier quotes, applicable taxes and professional fees before committing cash.

AllocationAssumed cash envelopeWhat to verify
Samples and product checks₹8,000Specification and sample approval
Initial inventory₹35,000Quantity and payment terms
Packaging and delivery tests₹7,000Packed dimensions and protection
Store and basic content₹10,000Recurring charges and actual scope
First acquisition experiment₹15,000Spending limit and measurement
Uncommitted cash reserve₹25,000Refunds and later obligations
Total₹1,00,000Reconcile to money available

The envelopes add to ₹1 lakh. If the inventory quote consumes the reserve, change the product or batch plan before silently taking money from refund cover.

Keep the ₹15,000 acquisition limit separate from stock money. Calculate acquisition cost from the test spend and kept orders, then use the remaining contribution to decide whether to run another test.

Choose the first channel deliberately

For an own-brand launch, decide whether the direct store is where you will take orders or whether you are testing through another route first. A marketplace, a wholesale arrangement and a direct website have different fees and responsibilities. Use a separate worksheet for each.

Choose software after listing what the first store must do. You might need variant selection, a clear serviceability check or a way to explain a technical product. Test those needs using the platform's available features before commissioning a custom build.

If you choose Shopify, its general store setup checklist covers store details, payments, shipping, policies and testing. Use it to configure the platform after you have confirmed the offer and costs.

Keep naming and compliance ahead of printing

Shortlist a name you can say and spell. Search for obvious clashes before investing in packaging. A free domain or social handle does not by itself establish that a brand name is legally available.

Get appropriate advice on name clearance and the registrations, tax treatment, labels and product requirements that apply to your actual business. Record who is checking each item and what evidence closes it.

Use a temporary design proof for packaging while those checks are open. Do not turn a long print run into a deadline that pressures you to skip a necessary review. Include the cost and time for corrections in the cash plan.

Build a product page that answers buying questions

Photograph and describe the product you can actually ship. Give dimensions, materials, contents and care information where they matter to the purchase. Show what is included and what the buyer would need to buy separately.

Put delivery and return information where a customer can find it before paying. State any limits plainly. If you are still confirming a delivery promise with the fulfilment partner, fix the promise before sending traffic to it.

Read the page on a phone with someone unfamiliar with the product. Ask them to choose a variant and explain what they expect to receive. Correct misunderstandings before adding more persuasive copy. A beautiful store that leaves a buyer uncertain about size has unfinished product information.

Test the route from payment to refund

Shopify's test-order documentation explains how a test order checks settings such as inventory, shipping and notifications. Use the test method available for your selected payment provider. Real transactions may incur processing fees. Live buyers cannot pay while payment providers are in test mode.

Use this practical checklist around the platform's instructions:

  • Choose the correct product variant and confirm the amount at checkout.
  • Check both serviceable and unsupported addresses against your shipping rules.
  • Confirm that the order appears where the person packing it will work.
  • Inspect the confirmation message and the stated delivery information.
  • Walk through cancellation, refund handling and stock correction.
  • Return the store to its intended live payment configuration after testing.

Also pack a real sample and inspect the parcel after a delivery test. Inspect protection, seals and damage after the parcel arrives. Keep test orders out of your customer acquisition reporting.

Find first buyers without guessing the channel

Choose an audience you can reach and an explanation you can demonstrate. An initial test could come from a relevant community where promotion is permitted, an opt-in list or a tightly scoped paid campaign. Pick the route because it reaches the intended buyer.

Write the hypothesis before you spend. For example: “Commuters understand the leak-proof demonstration and can select the right size without contacting support.” Then record the evidence that would contradict it, such as repeated sizing questions or orders for the wrong variant.

Avoid buying a large batch of content before you know which objection matters. A useful demonstration of the real product is more informative than a set of broad claims. Keep every spending increase tied to something you have actually learned.

Keep a first-order log

An order log turns a launch into a working business process. Keep personal customer information in the appropriate protected system. The learning sheet should use only the detail needed to understand the problem.

FieldWhat it helps you decide
Discovery channelWhere a buyer came from
Product and variantWhat is attracting demand
Discount and kept revenueWhether the offer has room for costs
Fulfilment outcomeWhether placed orders reach buyers
Refund or complaint reasonWhat needs a product or page change
Acquisition spend for the periodWhat the experiment cost

Distinguish placed, cancelled, delivered and refunded orders. Do not celebrate the same order as revenue after the money has been returned. Compare a defined spending window with orders whose outcomes you have allowed time to observe.

Once the store can take and fulfil a test order, assign owners and dates using the product launch plan. If your cost sheet still has blanks, bring those to the free launch review. An unanswered cost question is useful work to identify before the first campaign.

Questions in the margin

How should I approach starting an ecommerce store?

Start with a buyer and a product offer. Get cost quotes and check fulfilment before choosing the smallest store setup that can explain the product and accept an order.

What comes first when starting an ecommerce business from scratch?

Confirm a customer problem and a feasible product. Build a cost sheet before committing to inventory or a large website build.

How do I start an ecommerce brand?

Decide what you will sell under your brand and why someone would choose it. Check the name and product requirements with suitable specialists before committing to printed stock.

How to start a D2C brand without spending everything on ads?

Separate stock and setup money from the acquisition test. Keep a cash reserve and a written test limit. Check delivered orders and contribution before increasing spend.
